My Feline Health Society Page
| Meow! My name is Phelicity. I am purroud to be a memfur of the Feline Health Society of CLAW. We are a group of kitties who care furry much about good health fur cats and haf fun purrticipating in activities about good health! |
Feline Health Society was a CLAW featured group of the month fur May,2001! That was a great honor! Our leader, Charlie, made this beautifur banner fur me. All our memfurs got one. My memfurship card and my new 4500 Club Award I just got in 2003:
I believe, after a good and loving home, a cat's good health is the most precious gift. We cats haf good natural instincts about taking care of our health, at least once we are grown up! But there are some impurrtant things our humans can do fur us to help us remain in good health, top condition, and the bright eyed, robust picture of purrfect catness we were meant to be!
1. Above all, we cats should be spayed and neutered as soon as we are old enough. I myself was spayed, efen though I am a pure breed of cat, a Birman. That does not make a difference, unless there is a furry good reason fur that cat to haf kittens and they will be valued and provided wonderful homes. It is well known that an altered cat usually leads a much longer, happier and problem-free life than a cat who is not.
2. We need to go to the Vet efurry year fur a checkup, efen if we are nefur sick. When we are young, we need yearly vaccinations fur serious feline diseases. There are new ways of thinking now, about whether we continue to need those yearly booster shots in our middle and older years. The incidence of vaccination-related sarcomas in cats is furry real, and you will want your human to consider this carefully and talk to the Vet about it. As we become older, our checkups should include bloodwork and tests fur signs of major diseases.
3. We should always be fed a premium, high-quality cat food diet, in order to maintain our good health. It may be more expensive than the cheap grocery store kinds, but not nearly as expensive as taking a sickly kitty to the Vet all the time!
4. Any change in our litter box habits, our behavior or our appetites is most likely a signal that something is wrong. We need to go to the Vet if we are not acting normal, especially in our later years, to find out as early as possible what is wrong. If we are suddenly drinking a lot of water or losing weight, it is really urgent to find out why.
5. It is much easier to keep us cats free of nasty fleas these days, with the new topical treatments such as Advantage and Frontline. Fleas can make us sick, as well as itchy, so this is impurrtant! The new treatments are much safer to put on us than the old poisonous powders and sprays were, too. Some of those could make a kitty furry ill because they were so strong.
6. We should not be declawed, not fur any reason! Declawing is not just trimming off our nails; it is a cruel, inhumane and debilitating amputation of our toes at the first joint. It is against the law in most European countries, and causes the cat extreme pain and lifelong problems in her balance, litter box behavior, and well-being. Instead, we can be taught to use our scratching posts or scratch pads, or a wood log can efen be brought into the house fur us to scratch on. Our claws can easily be kept trimmed. Or, if they are a problem, Soft Paws™, soft nail caps fur cats can be put on them. But we do not want to be crippled fur life by declawing. We need our claws!
