HIghland Gardens Civic Association
Minutes for Jan. 12, 2011

Chris, our VP, called the meeting to order. Since we have been meeting in the smaller room, and there was no flag, Chris brought one to the meeting so we could say the Pledge of Allegiance.

After the pledge, Shirley read a report from our Code Officer Tommy Pinder as he could not attend the meeting. It included a a suggestion for a landscaping project to be done on the corner of 22nd Ave. and Pembroke Road Badcock Furniture parking lot. It seems that patrons of the liquor store on the corner go to buy beer, wine, etc., then take it to the parking lot and drink there. This has been reported to the police

Chris told about the three committees that have been formed to work with the city on making improvements in the neighborhood. The committee's are: Beautification, Gateways and Adams St. Since Chris belongs to the Gateway committee, she gave a report on what they were working on, and David Kout, who chairs the Adams St. committee also gave a report on ideas about what to do with the property on Adams St.

Maria Jackson Ratlif presented a program called the "File of Life". This is an envelope that contains vital medical and contact information about the residents in the house. It has a magnet so it can be attached to the fridge in case of an emergency. This could be important in case paramedics are called. She passed out a number of files with requests for more.

In the absence of our treasurer, Shirley reported that we have $1330.21 in the bank. The money was put back into the account from the fraudelent checks, and because of that, we need to open a new bank account.

Ofc. Sean Gerber reported that no tresspassing signs were being put in the Badcock Parking lot. He also spoke to the Liquor Store owner about his customers and the parking lot. (This was the problem mentioned above.) He touched on the burglaries in the neighborhood, and said they are being done by kids. He explained how calls are handled when you call the police. Then he gave us the sad news that he was being transfered to the downtown area.

This was the perfect time for Shirley to mention the Crime Watch program. All the neighbors are encouraged to take part. It doesn't cost anything except for one to be aware of surroundings. Getting to know one's neighbors is a big part of the program.

Chris then mentioned that we will vote on some by-law changes in March and we need to select a nominating committee to get a slate of eligible people who might want to run for office. That will also take place in March.

The meeting was then adjourned.
