Minutes for November 9, 2011
The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, then moved on to questions about code violations. A lot of complaints about hard junk put out at the wrong time, and other violations were voiced, but Code Ofc. Tommy Pinder was absent so these complaints will be forwarded on to him.
David announced the passing of Code Ofc./Supervisor Jim McGee. It was agreed that we would send flowers from the association. When Jim attended our meetings, he handled all the complaints with a smile. He was such a happy guy and he will be missed by us as well as his co-workers.
Beam gave us his report saying things were relatively quiet, but the biggest thing on the agenda right now is free parking down town. Changes are coming. He reminded us that 15-20 years ago, downtown had antique stores and thrift stores. When the thrift stores were legislated out, as a result, the antique stores went with them. So, it's changing back. There will be a change of uses... free parking, US 1 will be rezoned to mixed use, Barry University will be coming to town next month, a section of Parkside will become a historic area...all this to promote the downtown area. A short question and answer period followed.
David then called for the treasury report. The ending balance for Sept. was $944.68. Chris ordered replacement signs, the cost was $344.50. That leaves a balance of $600.18. We have $5.00 on hold to be added to expected checks to come in from the National Night Out.
David announced that starting in January, we will be checking our records to see who is a paid member and who is not. This means that those who have not paid dues, cannot vote. He also mentioned along the lines of money, that the city has come up with a plan to beautify neighborhoods. There will be monetary awards to those who take part in what is called the Neighborhood Challenge. First, Second, and Third prizes will be awarded to the winners. There must be 25 houses in each neighborhood taking part to qualify. A discussion of ideas followed. This lead again into talking about crime in the neighborhood, empty houses, and what to do to improve things.
David then announced that next month we would be having our Christmas party and asked for helpers. Volunteering were Pat Lay, Mary Towey, Maria Ratliff, Donna Rossi, and Shirley Stealey. The party is held in place of our regular meeting.
It was announced that Nadine McCrae will be our speaker for Jan. They've already been through a redevelopment project, so she can tell us what to expect and give us some ideas for Adams Street. County Commissioner Susan Guntsberger is a possible speaker for February. As there was no more discussion or comments, the meeting was adjourned.
